Happy New Year! Cheers to a Glamorous 2012!

I am excited to let everybody know that I am going to be doing a complete re-do of my blog in the upcoming weeks. I let too much time get away between postings this last year, and I think it was because it just isn't reflecting the new direction my life is taking. So, time for a change! And I am looking forward to sharing it with you.

Glamorous Update!

Just want to give everybody a little update on everything that's going on over here at My Birmingham and My Glamorous Mind!

I have been hard at work on my upcoming cabaret show "Confessions of a Glamorous Mind!" We are heavy into rehearsals right now and I can't tell you how fortunate I am to have such talented team with me. You really are only as good as the people you surround yourself with, so I should be fabulous!! Here are a few "Behind-the Scenes" photos of rehearsal.

I want to introduce you to the "Glamorous Group" of people that have been so kind, and generous in their encouragement, and hard task masters making me stretch to get it where it needs to be:

My Director, Jan D. Hunter- She is a brilliant cabaret performer/actress and I actually wanted to get her autograph the first time we met to discuss working together! I still can't tell you how lucky I feel to be working with her. She had the brilliant suggestion that I needed to make my show come to life.

My Musical Director/Pianist: Jay Tumminello-Brilliant! He is a musical genius and you will think so, too, when you realize he makes me sound like I can actually sing! Jay's friendship and collaboration has really been this show's gift to me.

My Photographer/Lighting Designer/Chief Supporter/Husband/Best Friend: Billy Brown-Couldn't do it without you!

The Glamorous Group at B-Metro Magazine: Joe O'Donnell for supporting me in every way, and giving me the opportunity to find my voice and develop it and to be a part of such a cool magazine that shows the very best that Birmingham is; And Robin Colter-For designing such a glamorous poster for me and becoming such a Glamorous Girlfriend!

To my kids-Locke & Carlyle-Thank you for going along with our crazy family adventures and being such good sports! And for leaving the house whenever I needed to rehearse there! And, Carlyle for your willingness to help out in any way.

Sometimes you just have to finally say "Yes" to taking on a new adventure, and doing what you have always "dreamed" of doing, no matter how crazy it might seem. I decided to take my own advice that I have been giving in my columns. Life is short, and it's supposed to be fun, so why not go for it, right? I think age probably has a lot to do with coming to this realization. I can't thank everyone enough for their support and cheers, and I am touched beyond words that you come out to see the show when there is so much going on in your busy lives. A heartfelt Thank You!

Being a bit of a rebel is fun, and in fact, I consider myself to be a bit of one. I do like to challenge the status quo sometimes and I love to challenge someone's preconceived ideas and prejudices (always with a smile, of course!). I think this is even our responsibility and offers us the opportunity to affect real and positive change in the world and to offer an alternative view or different perspective on a subject. We might also be changed!

Asking questions is the way our society has moved forward on every important issue, from equality, race, and politics, to gay rights, religion, and everything in between.

Glamorously Good News: Updates!

Well, I have realized that it has been quite a while, and entirely too long, since I shared with anybody all the Glamorously Good News that has been going on here in the Brown Household. So here's a little update, and hopefully a little inspiration for anybody that might be looking forward to planting, or a book to read, or a new restaurant to try!

B-Metro Magazine: I hope everybody has had the chance to check out my column in B-Metro and join in the monthly challenges of the "Year of Living Glamorously" project. I have been meeting the challenges myself, and am excited to be sharing them with you. Lot's of good ones coming up, so stay tuned!

Glamorous Gardening: I am thrilled to report that everyone of my perennials that I planted in my perennial garden has come back and is thriving! (I hope to post a picture soon!) I have protected and watched with great anticipation these babies all winter and spring and it has been cause for happy celebration around here that they are up and growing and spreading! I have had to shoo Sadie, our Golden Retriever, out of the newly spread pine straw a few times, but I think she has gotten the message. Also, the irises that I transplanted last year are getting ready to pop open, and I am so excited that they like their new location. Now, I am eagerly awaiting the chance to plant my herbs!

Fun with the Family: My son came home from college for a short visit during Spring Break and we enjoyed some fun "Family Night" cookouts & games! Our daughter is learning to drive-need I say more?? Actually, she is doing a great job.

"Date Night": Billy and I have enjoyed some of the best "Glam in B'ham" dining recently when we tried Fire restaurant for the first time. Wow! Loved it!! The food was delicious and the atmosphere is small and intimate, we sat in the main dining area. The perfect atmosphere when I want a wonderful meal but don't feel like "seeing & being seen". Not a high pressure social scene, which I love, after all, it's tough to get me to leave my own patio, with the candles lit, some great jazz playing through the speakers, and some smoked salmon dip from Western or "The Pig", and a glass of Prosecco-who wants to go out?! I still say living glamorously begins at home!

Glamorously Good Reads: We went to the book signing & reception for the kickoff of his book tour, of our friend and neighbor, Keith Thomson, for his new novel "Twice A Spy", by Double Day. It was held at Alabama Booksmith, one of our best little independent book stores located in Homewood. This book is the sequel to Keith's first book, "Once A Spy", which was a huge success and is being made into a movie. Great fun and excitement-a must read!!

News! I am working on a redesign of my Blog and hope that everyone will like it. I am still working on it, but hope to have it up before too much longer! There are a few other things cooking but I can't lift the lid on them yet, they are still simmering a little bit, but I will let you know just as soon as as they are ready-I am really excited!!-LA:)

"A Year of Living Glamorously":Be Daring-Face One of Your Fears!

Well, I did it! I met my "Glamour Goal", the January challenge for "A Year of Living Glamorously" project. I confronted my fear of heights! I forced myself to go up to the top of the statue of Vulcan, the tallest structure in B'ham, and walk out onto the observation deck. As I mentioned in my column in B-Metro, you have read my column haven't you? I hope!:), the fear of heights had started to really take a hold of me. So, since the first challenge in the AYOLG project is to confront one of your major fears, this was mine. And it really does feel empowering to know you can overcome blocks, obstacles, anything that can stand in the way of reaching for our goals and living the life we really want and imagine it to be.

I will tell you, it is not easy for me, I really start to freak out, and since I do not look out the elevator window (who's idea is that??) it made me crazy when I read the information on the wall about wasps buzzing around at the top (even though Billy swore it is too cold for them this time of year). I really did get out of the doorway and walk across the walkway, again with holes in the floor so you can see down (some sadist planned this I am sure!), and actually looked out. It was so windy, I almost didn't get my back off the wall!! But the view is so worth it, it really is a beautiful look at Birmingham.

I actually make myself do this every year, along with going up on some of the highest structures in the world (World Trade Towers, Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, Sears Tower, Grand Canyon, etc.), when we travel, because I don't want this to overtake me and keep me from enjoying the magnificent views of life! I don't want to miss out on anything. And the best way I know of to keep yourself from missing out on all the most glamorous things in life is to confront the fears that are keeping you from going for it, have someone that supports you, take a deep breath, step up to the challenge, open your eyes, and enjoy the view from the top!

Everyday Glamour: Winter Time Glam!

Well, as many of you know I am really quite the hermit (despite all appearances here to the contrary!) and I don't "do" winter. When it gets below 60 degrees I start to hibernate, so that is why you haven't heard from me very much lately. However, given the fact that I have a family that actually doesn't like staying in the house for days (weeks) at a time, I am occasionally dragged out into the bitter cold. Unfortunately (for my waist line!), or fortunately really, mostly we have gone out to eat! And that is always easy to turn into a glamorous occasion because we have some of the best restaurants in the country right here in our own backyard.

While my son was home for college over the holidays (and he is now back in warm & sunny Southern California!?) we got together with the whole family and had Sunday lunch at one of our favorites, the Bright Star restaurant in historic downtown Bessemer. The Bright Star has been a long time favorite of ours, and for everybody else, too, because it has been there since 1907. In fact, it was just recognized by the James Beard Foundation, at an awards ceremony in New York City, as an American Classic Restaurant, one of only 5 restaurants given that honor in 2010. You really must make sure to dine there soon whether you have eaten there recently, or never!

We also went to dinner one night at another one of our fave's, Bottega Cafe located in a beautiful building on charming Highland Avenue. Always guaranteed a fun time there!

We also just celebrated my good friend, Beth's, birthday at Fleming's Steak House. I had never been there before, but, oh, so delicious!! I love a good steak!

Let's see, I really do think that's the only times I have been out, but both so worth getting bundled up for! I have actually gotten a lot accomplished during this hibernation period and I am thrilled to let you all know that I have finished the first rough draft of my guide book-Yayy! It is about to be edited:) and I will keep you posted on the progress. Some of you have graciously asked me about being able to buy it (for Christmas presents, I know, Sorry! but for 2011:) and also to have available when I am speaking to all the wonderful organizations that I am privileged to get to speak with.

I also have another project that I am SUPER excited about and I will share the details of that with you as they come about-Stay Tuned!!!

I am really excited to let everybody know about the new project I am kicking off this month. It's the "A Year of Living Glamorously" project, and you can read all about it in my column in the January issue of B-Metro Magazine.

The project came about, quite simply, from my desire to continue in my journey of personal growth, self-discovery, and beautiful life experiences that I have enjoyed sharing with all of you for whom the pursuit and enjoyment of "The Glamorous Life" seems to resonate. It is my sincere belief that life is made more meaningful and richer when we open ourselves up to new experiences, people, cultures and unexplored areas of our own personalities. This "A Year of Living Glamorously" Project will offer monthly challenges, some that might require a little soul searching, and some that are just plain fun (as it all really should be!). If you have even just one new experience a month, that adds up to a whole year of glamorous living.

Holiday Glamour: Glamorous Gifts!

Well, the count down is near, and if you are like me you, still have quite a few of your favorite people to shop for. Actually, this is one of my favorite parts of Christmas, I love finding the perfect gift for someone. It is such a joy to see them open a gift that was so obviously bought with them in mind. It is not always easy! (And sometimes it happens in June!) but I have some favorite shops around B'ham that always seem to offer the perfect gifts for the peeps on my "nice" list! I also almost always try and buy locally made products whenever possible. It somehow seems more personable, being handmade, even if it is not by my own hand (a good thing!). And of course, we have so many talented artists and crafts people right here that there is no need to look any further than our own backyard! Here then is a list of some of my favorite shops. Date Night!: Dinner & The Theatre

Last night was Billy's and my official "Date Night" and we had so much fun at the Wit's Other End Holiday Cabaret Show. They are such a talented group of performers and this is a crazy, zany show that finds the humor in (good naturedly) poking fun at just about everything we can all relate to; everything southern, sex, politics, race, religion, you name it.

I, of course, think nothing makes for a "Glamorously Good Time" as much as laughing the night away, and this show guarantees that you will do just that! And it is showing at that historic and charming little theatre in Caldwell Park, the Virginia Samford Theatre.

Prior to the show we grabbed a bite to eat at Brio in Brookwood Village. I love their Wood Fire Gilled Salmon Salad.

An opening night at the theatre calls for playing a little dress up, and I always feel tres glamorous in this fun leopard print coat (with a teal lining that you can't see in the picture) and my favorite red and leopard print peep-toe heels that I bring out every Christmas (you can click on the photo to enlarge it and see the shoes better).

"Glamorously Good Reads" Books from B'ham's Best! "Hugh Martin's The Boy Next Door"

I love curling up with a good book on a cold winter day, and I can't think of a more appropriate book for this time of year than the new book out by Birmingham native Hugh Martin, titled "Hugh Martin: The Boy Next Door".

Even if his name does not ring a bell to you, you are surely familiar with his most famously written Christmas song, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", as well as other memorable classics, "The Trolley Song", and "The Boy Next Door" from the musical "Meet Me in St. Louis", with Judy Garland.

It is described as an enchanting jaunt through the Golden Era of Broadway and MGM Musicals, (a most glamorous time!). He is 96 now, and lives in California. so how exciting that he has written his story! It's on my Christmas list, but it just might not make it under the tree! Pick up your copy at Alabama Booksmith!

I am hoping that by now everybody has at least heard about the newly opened Railroad Park, our city's most glamorous new addition located down on 1st Avenue South. The wonderful folks at B-Metro Magazine asked if I would write an article on how I will be enjoying the beautiful park, and asked Billy if he would document it? How lucky is that? I get to go play in the park all day and be photographed by my super talented photographer husband!

Glamorous Gardening: November News from My Garden!

Here's a quick update from my garden and a couple of photos from my iphone:

On this beautiful November 1st morning, I went out and cut me a small bouquet of camellias and another one of gardenias! Yes, they are still blooming! Also, these crazy tomato plants are still producing and I pick a handful everyday, here is a small bowl that I picked over the weekend!

And here is my garden helper, our Sadie Girl, always ready to scare off any squirrels or chipmunks that threaten to invade!

Interview with Photographer Billy Brown: Tips for Making a Glamorous Photo

I recently had the occasion to have some new photos made, after using the same ones for a year, and much to my good luck, I happen to have one of the best photographers around to call on, photographer extraordinaire, Billy Brown, who just so happens to be my husband! In addition to his other award winning work, Billy is well known as a "people" photographer and has photographed some of the most beautiful & recognizable people in the world (above are just a couple I could get my hands on!). He is known for making people feel very comfortable in the front of the camera, weather a celebrity who is constantly being photographed, or someone who equates having their picture made with a trip to the dentist. I am very grateful to Billy for always making me look much more glamorous than I ever really look, and he graciously agreed to give some tips for making a glamorous photo next time you find yourself stepping in front of the camera.

Billy's Tips for a great portrait:

Here is a list of considerations and ideas to help you prepare for a portrait.

Make sure you choose a photographer that makes you feel comfortable. Choose a photographer that loves to photograph people, you will see a clear difference in the outcome. If you have confidence in your photographer, you will have a more successful photo shoot.

Plan first!

Meet with your photographer to discuss and plan your portrait. Even if this is only a phone meeting you should discuss your ideas and any concerns you may have. You should discuss clothes, color schemes, hair and make up options as well the overall feel of the portrait you want.

Give some thought to what you want your portrait to be. Have you seen examples of what you like? Share this with your photographer.

It is the eyes and facial expressions that dominate and tell the story. It's all about how you feel.

The clothes you choose should be chosen by how they make you look & feel. You should be comfortable in what you are wearing. If you feel good you will make a better portrait. The clothes shouldn't be too busy, and solid colors are usually better than prints.

Hair and Makeup:

Hair should be clean and styled your favorite way. Now is not the time to get a new cut or style.

Also remember to bring all your hair & makeup supplies & clothing accessories.

Makeup should be applied a little heavier than normal daylight wear.

Men might want to use a little powder to cut down on forehead shine, as well as a little under eye cover up.

If using a stylist, have a consultation before the shoot so everyone is on the same page and you are comfortable that they know the look you are after.

The key is for you to be comfortable so you can be relaxed and have fun at your photo session.

Remember, too, that most "problem" areas can be corrected in retouching. It is very common today.

My Glam in B'ham Fall Survival Guide: Autumn Must Haves!

Now that it seems as if the weather will, finally, cooperate and start feeling like fall, and the endless summer might be behind us at last, (I am crossing my fingers so as not to jinx us!) I am excited to get outside and enjoy the cooler breezes, colorful autumn leaves and the general excitement I always feel when the seasons start to turn. There is always such a frenzy of activities starting this month and I always seem to want to squeeze them all in. But to keep my self (and my family) from feeling overwhelmed by it all, I have made my annual list of "Fall Must Haves", things I want to do before winter weather sets in (am I dreaming?). Here's to Fall in "My Birmingham", it can be yours, too!-LA:)

I can't think of a better way to check out some new, & favorite, artists, than on a lovely fall saturday in the park! To Do: Take a Convertible Ride! This is convertible weather, and nothing is quite as glamorous as putting the top down and taking a drive to check out the pretty fall color, than a ride in a convertible. We bought a small little convertible, our "date car", right after we got married, over 20 years ago, and have enjoyed it every spring & fall ever since! It is not an expensive, rare, car, nor is it practical, and it always needs work, but we bought it long before we had any furniture (or kids!), and are so glad we did! Ahhh, the decisions of youth! If you do not have a convertible parked in your garage, make sure to rent one, at some point, for a glamorous fall weekend drive! Here are a couple of our favorite convertible drives around town (we avoid driving on the major roadways when possible):

To Make-Glamorous Gourmet: Pumpkin Carving, Spider Cupcakes, Apple Cider, & Autumn Pumpkin Bisque The season brings out the kid in me (it actually doesn't take very much!), and, along with getting all my favorite candy for Trick-or-Treaters (caramels!), I love to get in the kitchen (with some help from my kids) and make all of my family's favorite fall recipes. Wonderful Weekends: Picnic, Friends & Fall Festivals!

This past weekend was an absolutely wonderful fall weekend, and even if the weather will not cooperate, we are carrying on with favorite fall events, and one of my favorites is a fall picnic! My friend, Nancy, is the most gracious and generous hostess, preparing a spread of fantastic food & setting up outdoor games on the 2nd Sunday of every month, when she hosts a picnic at Rushton Park for all of her picnic pals. If you are a picnic fanatic (& I certainly hope you are, as they are very glamorous gatherings!) you simply MUST check out her charming store, Green Central Station, in the historic Lakeview District. Not only does she have every type of picnic supply, for sale or to rent, that you could possibly need or desire, but she will also plan & put together for you, the "Perfect Picnic"!

Saturday actually kicked off our wonderful weekend with Oak Street Garden Shop & Local Market's 20th Anniversary Fall Festival. I LOVE this charming nursery & produce market (especially since I can walk there!) and it was so nice of them to put together such a fun day to say thanks to the Crestline community for 20 years of support. The market was all dressed up in it's fall costume of colorful pumpkins and colors and there were free hotdogs & ice cream, fiddle music, a candy corn counting contest & an old time apple press that was a huge hit with kids and adults alike. It was a beautiful fall celebration of community, neighbors, & friends, and that is the spirit of glamorous living!

In the Limelight: Artist Karin Fecteau

I am really exited to introduce this new feature of my blog! As you all know, I believe that surrounding yourself with art is a part of living glamorously, everyday. I have been fortunate enough to get to meet and know some truly talented artists that choose to live here in Birmingham, and I am thrilled to be able to introduce them, and their work, to you here, on my blog. For our first featured artist I want to introduce you to Karin Fecteau. I have been an admirer of Karin's work for many years, and am lucky to own one of her pieces in the purse series! I enjoy looking at it everyday, and isn't that what art in our homes is supposed to do, bring us joy? I am so happy to have the opportunity to share her talent with you! I am sure you will feel the same way about her work as I do, so make sure to check out her website for more of her artwork, prices and information on commissions.

1) What inspires you?

A: Natural light and how it affects colors, shapes and shadows always inspires me. If I’m painting in my studio, there’s usually a healthy, loud dose of Mozart blaring for inspiration as well. I also have a small group of friends and family (some artists, some non-artists) that give me creative feedback and encouragement during works-in-progress. They are a huge source of inspiration.

2) Do you have a favorite medium to work in?

A: As long as I can remember, I've loved working with watercolors. Oil paints work similarly and I enjoy working with those just as much. Lately, I've been experimenting with a new line of watercolors that are made with walnut oil instead of linseed oil and have been thrilled at the higher pigments and unique flow to the color.

3) Do you have favorite subject matter?

A: If someone told me I could only pick two subjects to paint for the rest of my life, it would be flowers and portraits. I enjoy painting the natural grace of a flower but I also enjoy the challenge of capturing a likeness and personality in a portrait.

4) Do you have a favorite place to paint?

A: Birmingham Botanical Gardens is my favorite place to paint because I can channel my inner Monet there. I was fortunate enough to paint in Monet's Gardens in Giverny, France. It was a wonderful experience! Luckily for me, I've found similarities in the gardens Monet designed and the BBG’s design. The shapes of the bridges are the same. The colors and reflections are similar. The wonderful colors and flowers are complementary. Sometimes I think BBG is better because it isn’t crowded and it’s free to enjoy.

5) What does living glamorously mean to you?

A: Living glamorously means doing what you love whether other people love it or not.

Glamorous Girlfriends! Time with Friends

We all lead such busy lives in such a hurried world, that it is so easy to suddenly realize that a week, or month, has gone by and that we never did make the time to get together with that friend we have been planning and promising to have lunch or coffee with. Our friends are a vital part of our lives and studies have shown that our friendships are important to our well being and offer all sorts of health (and heart!) benefits. Of course, those of us lucky enough to have wonderful friends knew this without any study to tell us!

This week I put down on my calendar a "Glamorous Girlfriends" "date" with my fabulous friend, Meiko, that was absolutely unchangeable. And that is the key, it has to be a priority, not able to be canceled!

We made plans to check out the "Fashioning Kimono" exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art and to have lunch at "Oscars" the newly opened restaurant there. It was my good fortune to get to go see this exhibit with Meiko, because she is from Japan, and was able to give me all sorts of inside information about the art of Kimonos. And they are truly works of art. There are around 100 Kimonos in this exhibit, so it is definitely worth your time to see these pieces. Also, check their schedule for upcoming lectures about this show.

We were starving after viewing the exhibit so we enjoyed the garden view while having lunch at Oscars. We both ordered the Oscar Salad and it was delicious!

Of course, I really enjoy going to our museum and feel like we are really fortunate to have such a treasure of treasures available to us. And it's absolutely free! Although, donations are ALWAYS welcome.

Glamorous Getaways: Southern California!

As many of you know, I just got back a few days ago from moving my son into college out in Southern California. Even though I had 18 years to prepare myself for this moment, it has been a very emotional time. But I am proud of, and for, him, and excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for him. Being so far away from home, we decided to stay out there for a couple of more days in case he needed anything else from us (besides money, of course). So, after we had to say our goodbye's, we wiped our eyes and headed into the city to do a bit of sight seeing!

We knew we were visiting with some friends while out there, and given that, were on a limited time budget, so here is a quick peek at some of the places we squeezed in.

Quaint & charming Claremont, California with Mt. Baldy as a dramatic backdrop. Located 30 miles east of L. A., It's where my son is attending college. A perfect small town with access to all that Los Angeles has to offer.

Next time you are in L.A. you have to make sure to visit the incredible Getty Museum. But I warn you, you can easily spend all day (or a week, actually!), so give yourself plenty of time! Did I mention that it is Free?

Fun & Funky Santa Monica Beach Pier and the Third Street Promenade! A great place to eat, shop, and for people watching.

O.K a burger in L.A., glamorous? But we were exhausted & hungry, and it is a great burger!!

You know I love farmer's markets and Saturday morning at the L.A. Farmer's Market is a not to be missed, inexpensive, and indeed, a very glamorous experience!

Of course, one of the great things about living in Birmingham, is that we are so close to the airport (I heard some people on the flight had a 2 hour drive home after we landed!) So it is so convenient to book that flight for your next "Glamorous Getaway"!

Glamorous Gardening! Tomato & Basil Salad

It has been one hot & dry summer here in B'ham and my garden had started to suffer mightily! (My water bill has suffered mightily, too!) I did my best to keep it watered, hoping it would all survive another day when it might rain. And, (Finally!) it has rained, and it has been music to my ears!

My little (giant!) tomato plants have made a miraculous recovery, and begun producing again much to my son's and my delight! So I just wanted to share a picture with you of our recent bounty and the delicious salad we made using our tomatoes and the basil from the Kitchen Garden. I have been having such a fun time with my garden project this year and have enjoyed sharing it with you here. If you have been reluctant, but interested, in starting your own herb garden, this should be all the assurance you need that it really is fun & EASY to do! Soon it will be time to figure out what to plant for fall. I have never had a fall garden before, so if you have any suggestion I would love to hear them! Live Glamorously!-LA:)

Glam in B'ham Summer Survival Guide!: Late Summer Must Haves

Well, the "Dog Days of Summer" are here and the month of august sure is living up to it's reputation! Even my dog is enjoying spending her days inside, lying in front of the air vent. I know it's hot out there (heat index of 114 today!), so it's all about finding ways to keep our cool while still enjoying the last month of summer. My daughter has registered for school, though thankfully, she doesn't start for another couple of weeks, and my son is waiting to head off to college in 15 days!:( So as we head into the last few, sweet days of summer vacation, I have made a list of some of the fun things I still want to do before I get back on that school schedule. Wonderful Weekends! Mini Staycation!

Last weekend was one of those rare, unexpected, but welcome weekends when there seems to be plenty of time to fit everything in without feeling rushed. It was so nice, it really did feel like a stay-cation, and a very glamorous one, too, because it was filled with family time, couple time, and down time. How perfect is that? You have the opportunity to check some of these events out, too, because they are all happening again this weekend, right here in "Glam in B'ham"!

We began the weekend last friday with "Family Night" by attending the Magic City Actors Theatre opening night of "Little Shop of Horrors" at the Virginia Samford Theatre. We have always loved this crazy movie and the soundtrack, so we were all really looking forward to see it as a stage production. It was great! Even though the ending is different, the play was the same, they did a fantastic job with the set and (plant!), and the same great music. The entire cast is just so talented and outstanding, Birmingham is so fortunate to have this caliber of talent. And I thank them, because it gave us an incredibly fun an entertaining family night at the theatre!

Saturday morning we got up bright and early to beat the heat and get to the Pepper Place Saturday Market. I got the absolute juiciest, peachiest Chilton County peaches, and sweet blackberries. We also saw lot's of friends and heard some wonderful music-it's just a great experience, so you should definitely go! I will advise you to wear sunscreen, a hat, and remember to "Go Glamorously Green" and take a reusable tote bag!

Billy and I later enjoyed a relaxing lunch at Rojo, on lovely Highland Avenue.

Sunday, Father's Day, we packed up the car, the kids & their friends, and headed to the lake for a day with Billy's dad.

So make sure to catch a performance of "Little Shop of Horrors" (this is the last weekend!) and get out early to Pepper Place Market and you will be having a "Glam in B'ham" staycation, too!

Everyday Glamour: My Own Backyard!

Well, it's been a little crazy around the Brown household lately, with our oldest graduating from high school, making college decisions, our youngest changing schools, and life in general. I want to share with you some of what's been going on in my glamorous life right here in B'ham, and especially in my own backyard!

Being a true homebody at heart (I have been accused of being a hermit-and consider "There's no place like home" my own mantra.) we decided to finish up some projects around here, so we haven't been "out & about" lately. However, we all know that living glamorously, like most other things in life, starts at home, so here's a sneak peek into living life glamorously, everyday.

"Busy Mom's Fun with the Family": We celebrated Mother's Day my favorite way-having lunch here at home in our (almost) finished backyard! Thanks to my wonderful family for cooking & cleaning up! It was a perfectly glamorous day with my favorite people!

"Everyday Glamour": I am reading such a fun book "Once a Spy" the newest novel written by my neighbor (& friend) Keith Thomson. Definitely check this one out. Great idea for a Father's Day gift, or your summer reading list. B'ham has so many talented artists!

"Glamorous Gardening": Part of working on our backyard involved me creating a "kitchen herb garden". I love it, located right outside my kitchen door!! It must love it there, too, because I can't believe how much it has grown! And the first little patio tomatoes are starting to turn red!

As anyone who has been reading my blog knows, my favorite flower in the world is the gardenia and I am blessed to have several huge, bushes growing around my yard. It must have been a perfect year for gardenias this year because I have an abundance of them, and have many bouquets all around my house. A small vase of these beauties next to your bedside will ensure you to have sweet dreams! Ahhhh, so lovely and fragrant! And most glamorous!

My Scoop! is an online resource magazine for the Southern Fashionista and, given my aversion to shopping, I good naturedly kidded Amy that they must have run out of people to add, but I am really thrilled to be included in with such a stylish and accomplished group of women. The women featured on this list are all passionate about what they do and very involved in their communities and causes that are near and dear to them. Glamorous Gardening: My Favorite Garden Shops, Publications, & Gardens!

Spring has finally sprung here in B'ham and once the weather turns warmer, I always start feeling anxious to get outdoors and work in my yard. Especially after this particularly cold and wet winter, my yard is in much need of some attention. I can't wait to get out there and see what survived the winter, what didn't, and look for any signs of fresh spring growth. Now, I am not really a gardner AT ALL, and would never claim to be (my dear friend, and Master Gardener I might add, Cathy, can certainly attest to that!), but I have that desire to put on my garden gloves and till the soil with my spade. I also have so many wonderful little plants all around my house that I am just finding out what they are, after being here for two summers. I am always thrilled to see my first Daffodils, and relieved to see that my Daisies are looking good. And I am excited to plant the Black Eyed Susan's that my sweet neighbor, Karen, gave me from her yard. That's another thing I love about gardening, the history and stories that plants can pass along.

My desire to plant really starts back in the cold, dark days of February. I go to the library (there is a great little library at the Botanical Gardens!) and start checking out every book filled with photos of charming little gardens. Then, once I start seeing the early flowering trees and Daffodils blooming all over town, I am desperate! Actually, I think spring is Birmingham's loveliest season. Anyway, with the warmer weather finally here, I thought I would share with you some of my favorite inspirational gardening ideas including local publications, public gardens, and favorite garden shops. I hope they inspire you just as much!

Oak Street Garden Shop- I have to say, that anywhere I can walk to is the most glamorous spot for me, and I am really fortunate to have such a charming little garden shop so near to my house. The folks there are so knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. And they never tire of answering all of my insane gardening questions-at least, they don't let on if they do!:) Also, they are home to Local, a great little produce market carrying all local produce!

Leaf and Petal, & Sweet Peas, -I also love these great little nurseries! Another of my favorite nurseries, a short distance outside of B'ham, in Jemison, is Petals From the Past. Definitely worth the visit!

For inspiring walks you have to visit the Birmingham Botanical Gardens (I especially love the Southern Living Garden) and Aldridge Botanical Gardens. There are also many homes with lovely gardens to drive around and drool over. Some great neighborhoods are Edgewood & Hollywood, in Homewood, Forest Park & Redmont, and around the villages of Mountain Brook.

I really enjoy perusing Birmingham Home & Garden Magazine, and of course, Southern Living. And if you are a member of the Botanical Gardens (and you should be!) they have a nice little newsletter called "The Garden Dirt".

Some of my favorite shops to check out for garden gifts, tools, seeds & for our backyard bird friends, are Leaf & Petal (both locations), Sweet Peas, Little Hardware & Wild Birds Unlimited.

March issue of b-Metro: A Glamorous Mother/Daughter Outing

I hope everyone will grab the March issue of b-Metro Birmingham Living Magazine. In my column, "The Glamorous Life: Getting the most out of every day", I have shared some of my daughter's and my favorite places around town that add that little touch of glamour to a day out together. Some of the places are free (like the library) and some are more pricey (Socca-but she has to use her own allowance money!), but it's all about hanging out and spending time doing what she enjoys, and I enjoy it, too!

Wonderful Weekends: Snow, Romance & Girls Day Out!

Romance was in the air this past weekend and thanks to my Valentine we kicked the weekend off on a very glamorous note by attending the Michael Feinstein concert friday night with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Super Pops! I had been waiting all season long for this concert and it was worth the wait.

Among the many wonderful cultural offerings we are fortunate to be able to enjoy in our enlightened city is the musical concerts and special events presented by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. The ASO, with Maestro Justin Brown, is a much acclaimed orchestra that we can be especially proud of, headquartered right here in Birmingham. They perform all across the state including over 15 FREE concerts every year! One of my favorite series is the Super Pops! and the Michael Feinstein concert was part of that series. The orchestra sounded fantastic along with the incomparable Michael Feinstein and we were so glad the show went on given the icy roads and snowy weather conditions.

We actually began the evening with dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Chez Fonfon, located in 5 Points South. We went on the early side so as not to be rushed, and to beat the ever present friday night crowd.

Saturday we had our "Family Night" and went to the very hip new restaurant, Flip Burger Boutique, at the Summit. What a fun, great little place for the whole family. Very cool factor and, yes, we enjoyed Nitrogen Milkshakes all around!

Monday our kids were still out for Winter Break, so my daughter and I enjoyed a "Glamorous Girls' Day Out". We started with a stop by our local library, and yes, the library is a very glamorous place-all those books! After tearing ourselves away from there we headed up to the Summit for lunch, and a little window shopping before catching the matinee of "Young Victoria", a beautiful film that we both thoroughly enjoyed.

Date Night! Matt Dusk concert

After 23 years of marriage Billy and I still have an official "Date Night" every couple of weeks. Even though our kids are now of the ages that they can hang by themselves or with their friends (and prefer to, sadly, I might add) and we have a lot of opportunities to do things just the two of us, "Date Night" is different. This is not the time we talk about our work or the kids, or what needs to be done around the house (always something!), etc. We spend this time just doing something fun, glamorous, even! And there is always something fun going on in B'ham!

The other night we had a wonderful "Date Night". We spent a very enjoyable evening at the Hoover Library Theatre attending the Matt Dusk concert. Matt Dusk is such a super talented performer, right up there with Harry Connick, Jr & Michael Buble. If you are not yet familiar with him, you soon will be, and will be very sad that you missed seeing him at this concert if you weren't able to make it.

The Hoover Library Theatre has become a really wonderful performing arts center, bringing in a variety of performances. We have been fortunate enough to catch a few over the years, and always had a great time. There are still several shows coming up so make sure to check out their website and make plans for your own "Date Night"!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year holiday filled with family, friends and the love of the season. I also hope you were able to get out to some of the exciting events that we had going on around town. I enjoyed getting to spend some time with my family here in B'ham and from out of town, and had great fun getting together with friends, as well.

After all the holiday frenzy I am always glad to spend the month of January enjoying a little slower pace and taking some time to reflect on the year past and make plans and goals for the new year ahead.

Wonderful Weekends: Holiday Glamour

This past weekend was packed full of all the Holiday Glamour we could squeeze in, and even though it can get pretty hectic, it was all great fun!

I mean, how can you not be in the Christmas spirit when you wake up to a dusting of snow, as we did on Saturday morning? It set the perfect mood for the weekend festivities ahead. Of course, no matter how many things I drag everybody to (and many thanks to my wonderful family for being willing participants in my crazy Christmas frenzy-I don't have to make too many threats!LOL) I just can't make it to everything. So this is what we did make it to this past weekend:

Saturday morning we continued our Brown Family tradition by attending the Homewood Christmas Parade! We have been going to this since our son was about 2 and he is 18 now, and our daughter is now 14, and we still wouldn't miss it! And we still have our picture made with Santa Claus, himself, thanks to the good folks at Let's Get Organized! I look forward to it every year. Our son even drove over & met us there, so you know it is a tradition!

Billy & I then caught the end of the Pepper Place Holiday Market before we headed home to cheer on the Crimson Tide to their victory as SEC Champion's-Roll Tide!:)

Sunday we went to catch the Mountain Brook Christmas Parade (I told you I love parades!). I loved all the musical performances!

After that we headed home to rest up for a dinner with friends that evening. And that was our perfectly glamorous holiday kick-off weekend! Kiddin' Around/Fun with the Family: Moss Rock Preserve, Hiking, & Yogurt Mtn!

I was really looking forward to this past weekend, because I have always wanted to go to the Moss Rock Preserve Festival but had never made it, and it was going on this weekend. I thought it would be the perfect outing for our "Family Night". And it was!

What a gorgeous weekend it turned out to be! The perfect fall weather for being outdoors. That is another wonderful thing about Birmingham, we really do get to experience all four seasons, and Fall is my favorite!

The Moss Rock Preserve Festival, held in the beautiful Moss Rock Preserve, located in Hoover, celebrates nature, open spaces & eco-friendly ideas by hosting an art show with hundreds of artists exhibits, great music, delicious food and info. on living "green". There is something for everyone. We loved checking out all the artwork and I just had to buy a set of notecards from artist Claire Cormany, whose work I love!

Our favorite part of the day was exploring the hiking trails that run throughout the Preserve's 250+ acres. It has such natural beauty with the huge boulders and streams that run through it. Even if you missed the festival (so sorry!) definitely take some time during this beautiful fall season to "take a hike" & check out the Moss Rock Preserve.

Afterwords, we stopped by Yogurt Mountain to cap off "Family Night". What can I say?-Mmmmm:)

Wonderful Weekends: Parks & Art!

Now that Halloween is over and it's November, I guess the holidays are officially upon us. actually, I enjoy Halloween so much, I consider it to be the kick-off to the holiday season. We enjoyed having our neighbors over with their two little boys-2 of our 3 trick-or-treaters!- and they got to have all of my decorations and party food to themselves since my kids were gone. Hey, just because my kids have out grown it doesn't mean I have to!

Sunday was November 1st, and turned out to be a beautiful fall day-perfect weather for a couple of events that I wanted to get to.

We went over to one of my favorite parks in the city, Caldwell Park, to have lunch and lend our support to Taste $3.57, Slow Food Birmingham's benefit for healthier school lunches using more locally grown food. I have to say, I can't believe what delicious food you can have for just 3.57! Some of B'ham's top restaurants were there and we ate very well!

Next, we went over to another one of my fave parks (I love parks, can you tell?) Avondale Park, and checked out the fall Art in Avondale Park show. We are really fortunate to have so many talented artists here in B'ham and it's great that there are as many shows and festivals around town as there are. We have ample opportunities to support them, learn about them and their work, and add to (or start) our art collections. I thank them all for sharing their talents with the rest of us, and bringing a touch of glamour to my life!

I have some very exciting news to share! I will be writing a monthly column in Birmingham's newest, and most glamorous, magazine: b-Metro The Magazine of Metro Birmingham Living!

Beginning with November's premier issue, I will be writing about all the very talented people, exciting events, and cool places that add a touch of glamour to my days. Wonderful Weekends: B'ham Folk Festival, etc...

Well, we had another soggy Saturday & Sunday here in B'ham, but fortunately, there were enough pauses in the rain that we were able to still get out and enjoy some of the cool events going on around town.

Saturday morning we made it down to Pepper Place Market. As usual, we saw several friends there, which is always fun, and we got some wonderful goat cheese and a Pepper Marmalade to spread on top. The marmalade is "Not Yo Mama's" & is made right here in Homewood. Part of the fun of Pepper Place Market is all the music, food and crafts that are set up around there and we enjoyed hearing some great banjo music while we shopped around. I picked up a cool pair of earrings from Leah Dodd, that my daughter practically ripped out of my ears when she got home. (I guess I will never get to wear those again!) This was the last Saturday Market of the season but fortunately, the very clever folks at Pepper Place have opened the Pepper Place General Store that will be open all week long during the winter months. It is stocked with a lot of locally canned and preserved items and it is really charming, so you definitely want to check that out.

Sunday we headed over to one of my very favorite parks, Avondale Park, for theBirmingham Folk Festival. I think this is a great place to hold music festivals and concerts. It is really a lot of fun sitting in the beautiful amphitheatre with all of it's old stonework and the lake behind it. Just a fun, relaxed setting for listening to some great folk music-we loved it! Congratulations to the folks that put this together! It was so enjoyable, and the sun even peaked out a few times!

Monday night was family night this week and we played a few rounds of Rummy-one of our fave card games. I think it is always good to know how to play a few card games with a regular deck of cards- no special, fancy deck. You can find a deck of cards almost anywhere and then you will always be able to join in a game or entertain yourself. And you never know when a situation might arise when you need to be able to do that. (Just ask my mom about Pirate's Cove-LOL!)

The Women's Fund:Blogging Against Violence

This is a special blog post today, one I really wish I didn't have to write.

The Women's Fund of Greater Birmingham is hosting a very special event today to raise awareness of, and funds for, Voices Against Violence. The event is a blog-a-thon called "Blogging Against Violence" and I am humbly, grateful to participate.

Domestic violence is not just a women's issue, it is a community issue and it takes each one of us to stand up and speak out for the victims.

Below is a list of agencies that offer support, counseling, shelter, etc. for women who are in need of assitance. If there is someone you know that you suspect is being a victim of domestic violence please pass along this information. Get involved-Let them know they are not alone and that there are many support groups in the area.

If you can, please consider making a $25 donation to the Women's Fund of Greater Birmingham,. Your contribution will make a powerful impact on the lives of women and girls in our area.

Wonderful Weekends: ArtWalk!

September marks the beginning of one of my favorite times of the year, the time for Fall Art Festivals! As we all know, B'ham is home to an abundance of talented artists, and there are several shows in and around the area every fall that I always look forward to attending. One of those was this past weekend, ArtWalk, and I hope you were able to make it by there, too.

ArtWalk takes place along several blocks downtown around the cobblestoned streets of Morris Avenue. All the artists set up their artwork in the buildings and stores and along the sidewalk, as well as outside under some tents. It is really laid back and the artists are happy talk to you about their artwork, or share with you what their working on. And of course, they are more than happy to help you start or add to that collection of yours. As I have said before, surrounding yourself with pieces of art that you enjoy and make you happy, is one more way of adding a touch of glamour to your everyday life. Buying art should not be intimidating, it should be fun, and attending festivals and art shows are some of the best ways to get introduced to different types of art, as well as different artisits and their styles. Other things I love about ArtWalk, is the number of artists that show there. There really is something for everyone; paintings, drawings, mixed media, photography, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, etc. And there are all price ranges, from $5 and up. After all, the price of a piece is not what makes it valuable to you. It's how much pleasure it brings you everyday. And that is priceless!

Everyday Glamour: Dreamland Bar-B-Q!

Well, I experienced another "first" the other day. A few days ago my daughter, my husband, Billy & I had lunch at Dreamland Bar-B-Que in Southside. Now, I know that this is a very famous bar-b-que restaurant that has been here for many years (the original is in Tuscaloosa), and I really like bar-b-que, so I can't fathom how I have managed to miss eating at this great little place all these years, at least once. But, until the other day I had never had it. Boy, have I been missing out! But not anymore.

Dreamland Bar-B-Que has been on my list of places to try for some time now. I am so glad I got the chance to have lunch there when I found myself in the UAB/Southside area around lunchtime a few days ago. I mean, everyone eats there, and famous people from all over want to eat there when they come to our lovely town. So I have been a bit embarrassed that I had never been. Dreamland has a great little feel about it, it knows it's famous for it's bar-b-que & banana pudding, (Of course, I had to have some!) but it isn't a pretentious restaurant, and I like that. Pretense is not glamorous! Anyway, after all these years I can finally say I, too have eaten at Dreamland Bar-b-Que and I can't wait to go back!

Everyday Glamour: My Fave New Find!: A Picnic Store!

I am so excited about a new shop that I have found that I simply just have to gush about it. As anyone who might be following my blog knows by now (and btw-thank you for reading!), and for those of you who haven't, I love to picnic! In fact, I love everything about picnics. They are a very glamorous way to enjoy a meal outdoors, whether casually, or fancy. And it seems I have found a kindred spirit in Nancy Tran, who has opened a picnic supply store, Green Central Station, in the Historic Lakeview District in Birmingham.

I had read an article about it in the paper and had to go check it out. I am so excited! Not only does Green Central Station have new and vintage picnic supplies for purchase, but she rents them all, too! How cool is that? You can even buy your sandwiches and drinks there and pack your basket right there at the shop. She has every picnic essential: All types of baskets, portable tables, trunks, even books on picnicking. No matter what type of picnic experience you are looking for, she can provide it, whether a romantic wine & cheese for two or a family picnic with games of badminton and croquet, you will find it all at this wonderfully fun little shop! Yes, she rents croquet sets & badminton as well as bicycles! I told you it was so cool.

If you enjoy having a picnic in a park or other lovely spot you know of (and we have a lot of great parks and picnic areas here in B'ham), then this is the place to check out. And I haven't even told you the best part, she hosts a picnic every 2nd Sunday at 2:00 in Rushton Park!

So, make a stop by Green Central Station, pack up your picnic lunch, games, (& maybe a bike) and join Nancy & friends for a fun, and very glamorous time, for a picnic:)

Kiddin' Around: Keeping Cool at the B'ham Museum of Art

Well, the hot humid days of August are bearing down upon us as we are trying to savor the last few days of summer break. Once the reality hit me, of school starting back, I pinned down my daughter and told her I wanted to do something together, just the two of us. We have been seeing those billboards around town touting how "cool" the Birmingham Museum of Art is, so we decided that was the place go.

I am very happy to report that my daughter enjoys viewing, collecting (both of my kids have been buying small, inexpensive, but original pieces, from art shows since they were little), and creating art as much as I do, maybe more. She is certainly much more talented than I am (she gets that from her dad). It had been a little while since we've been to tour the museum, and hadn't seen the new Wedgewood Gallery, so we decided to check that out and have lunch in the Terrace Cafe.

Those billboards were right, it is nice and cool in the museum! We wished we had sweaters when we first sat down for lunch but then we got used to it and it felt great! I love the Terrace Cafe with all the light coming in from the windows. Lunch was wonderful-I had the grilled salmon salad , my daughter had the grilled chicken & pesto sandwich, we both had the raspberry lemonade and we split a creme brulee for dessert. Afterward, we toured the really beautiful Wedgewood collection, and of course no visit is complete without stopping by the Museum Gift Shop.

Really, we could spend hours in the Birmingham Museum of Art. If you haven't been lately (and I hope you made it to at least one "Art on the Rocks" summer event!) you definitley need to make plans to visit soon. You should also consider becoming a member- you get discounts in the shop and on event tickets, invitations to members only events, as well as information on films and lecture series, and newsletters about upcoming exhibits. In fact, you should consider joining now because a very exciting exhibit will be opening in October:Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, with lot's of special events planned.

I do want to mention one other thing. When my kids were little and I wanted to take them to the art museum (it's never too early to expose them to great works of art-and it's very glamorous-& Free!), we would stop in the gift shop and buy a few postcards of some of the pieces on display in the museum and then we would try and find them. It was a scavengure hunt and they loved it. I would buy them a small, little trinket if we found them all. I like to think it is because of this early exposure that they are very comfortable in the museum, recognize some of the great pieces and their artists, and have an appreciation for what a first class museum we are so fortunate to have here in Birmingham.

B'ham Teen Scene: Workplay

Remember when you were in your late teens and always trying to find somewhere exciting to go and something new to do? Well, I have an older teen and not much has changed. They are still looking for somewhere to go and something to do. Going to the movies gets expensive, and staying home watching television or playing Guitar Hero is over done. That age is still looking for excitement and it can be hard to find. Luckily for them there is a place in town where they can go to hear some great music in a cool environment, at a reasonable price, at Workplay!

Workplay, is a live music venue conveniently located on 23rd St. South. What makes them so great for the older teen crowd is that they have musical acts that are exactly what they enjoy listening to, and that they make you wear a wristband if you are under 21. So, they get to hang out in a hip environment and listen to great music, but can't be served alcohol. I think they have come up with the perfect plan. They don't cater to the older teen crowd, but they make it a welcoming environment for them. So I thank them for that!

Actually, Workplay features musical acts that represent the entire musical spectrum, so if you have never been, make sure to click on their link below and check out their upcoming schedule. They will probably be hosting some band you love or have been wanting to see. As a matter of fact, Billy & I have caught some acts at Workplay and it was awesome. We really love the fact that it is a smoke free environment in the theatre.(Not the bar area)

Glam' in Alabam': Fairhope, Mobile Bay, Week's Bay

Like many families, we have a tradition of taking our annual Family Beach Vacation. Each summer we take a week and head to our beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast Beaches. I always feel it is such a great family bonding experience. My family always did this when I was growing up, and it has provided some of my fondest childhood memories. Billy's family did the same and so we wanted to give our kids the same type of experience. It seems we have, because they look forward to it with great excitement every year. We all do. This year, though, we decided to try something a little different. We decided to check out Mobile Bay's famed Eastern Shore and the very charming little town of Fairhope, Alabama.

We each have been to this area a few different times over the years, but not as a family and not for more than a couple of nights. And not during the summer. So we knew a little bit about it, enough to know it's charms and to make us want to go back and spend more time there. We are so glad we did, because now we have experienced it's full on glamour!

Since we enjoy all the activities that the bay provides, boating, fishing, swimming, etc., we rented a house that was in the perfect spot along where Mobile Bay and Weeks Bay come together. We enjoyed boating up the Fish River and exploring the beautiful Magnolia River, the only place in the country where the mail is delivered, year round, by boat. When we took a day off from all the water activity we made a short drive over to the Week's Bay Estuary and learned about the Eco system of that area. They have a very cool nature boardwalk and hiking trails that would be great to check out in cooler weather, as well as many preserved animals from the area.

Another one of our favorite things about this area is the quaint town of Fairhope. Situated on the bluffs of Mobile Bay with it's beautiful Live Oak trees dripping with moss, it has a uniqueness about it that I haven't seen in any other part of our state. We really enjoyed strolling through the village and visiting all the shops and restaurants. We almost never made it out of the Page and Palette Book Store (a favorite!), and I know I gained weight visiting the fudge emporium and ice cream parlor, and I had a fantastic sandwich at Panini Pete's (which has been featured on the Food Network). Luckily, Fairhope has a wonderful Park system with a walking trail that runs along the bay and past some beautiful old homes, so I did get to walk off some of that snacking. Another favorite place was the Eastern Shore Art Center. They had a water color exhibit showing while we were there that was really lovely. In fact, Fairhope is known as a sort of artist's colony. It is evident in the abundance of public art that is all around the town and many well known writers and artists call this area home or visit often.

But the one thing you must do in the evening, when you are in this area, is to take a stroll along the public pier to see the spectacular sunsets. Actually, we had a very casual dinner (good fried shrimp po' boy's & very nice people!), at the Yardarm Restaurant located right on the pier. Everyone heads down there and walks the pier or strolls around the rose garden or finds a spot on the beach and takes in the beauty of the sun setting on the waters of Mobile Bay. Very glamorous!

If you are interested in planning a visit to this beautiful area and are wondering where to stay, there are several Bed & Breakfast Inns here as well as the grand dame of the area, The Grand Hotel, located in nearby Point Clear, that has been here in some form since 1847. It was extensively renovated after suffering severe damage in Hurricane Katrina. (We enjoyed taking a stroll around the grounds during afternoon tea!) Also, remember to pay a visit to the Fairhope Welcome Center, where you can pick up a map of the public art walking trail. Enjoy your visit!-LA

Kiddin' Around: Time with Teens

I have come to realize that the way to a teenage boy's heart is through his stomache. Which is a good thing to know because then it gives you all kinds of leaverage and brownie points-especially if you agree to make his favorite meal, treat him to his favorite restaurent, or offer to pay for anywhere!

I love to use this knowledge to my advantage to get together with my son for some time with just the two of us. Anything to do with food, he is up for. Going to his favorite places, trying somewhere new, even cooking. We have a lot of fun and the focus is removed from the same old conversations of school, friends, cleaning up your room, etc.

The other day I used this very tactic. I offered to buy his lunch & go anywhere he wanted to go (casually & within reason!). He took me up on it-naturally, and suggested Nabeels in Homewood. I was thrilled because I had never been there! Passed it a thousand times but never been, don't know why?!

Anyway, I fell in love with it-food, atmosphere, location, all of it! Maybe you are like me and have always passed it but never gone in. If you like Greek food (and who doesn't?) I strongly encourage you to stop by and check it out. It is delicious. They also have a little market and a charming outdoor dining area. It is conveniently located at the intersection of Oxmoor Road and Homewood Park and it's also close to the Homewood Public Library so you can just make a day of it!

We had a great lunch and it's always nice (and important, too, I think) to hang around with your teens doing something they enjoy. For boy's that's eating. I am glad he has good taste! Can't wait to go back to Nabeel's!

"Glam in Alabam'": Escape to the Lake!

Well, I hope everyone had a fantastic 4th of July celebrating our wonderful US of A's birthday! I know there were so many exciting events going on around town and I hope you were able to get out and enjoy the celebrations if you were here. I know the Thunder on the Mountain fireworks show on top of Red Mountain, over Vulcan Park, is a favorite and I also want to make it down to American Village in the lovely town of Montevallo, sometime for their authentic Revolutionary War, colonial celebration.

However, July 4th is a huge family celebration with Billy's & my families. It is always my family's reunion. It was my grandfather's & my great-grandmother's birthdays and we have always been out of town for the holiday and missed all the fun here in B'ham. Even so, we have a great time getting together with relatives we only see once a year or so, noticing how much the kid's have grown and meeting new additions to the family and remembering those that are no longer with us, reliving fun times and telling stories of growing up together with our cousins. (Confidential to the Douglas clan: I am, of course, referring to "The Garden" here! hahahaha-Great fun seeing all of y'all:)

Fortunately for us, Billy's parents live at the lake, so we always have a great time when we get together for a visit with them and his brother & sister & their families.

Going to the lake is a great summer time tradition in Birmingham. That is another great thing about living here. There are many beautiful lakes close by that you can get to in anywhere from 45 min. to 2 1/2 hours. Even if you don't have a lake house, some of the lakes in the State Parks have cabins for rent or even have lodges to stay in. If you just want to spend a day on the water, most all the large lakes have public boat launches if you want to put your own boat in the water. Even if you don't have a boat some lakes offer pontoon boat rentals for the day. Going to the lake is great family time fun! Swimming, skiing, canoeing, jet ski's, fishing, boating, tubing-all fun things to do together with all ages. It is a wonderful bonding experience for the whole family. And it is readily available from right here in Birmingham, Alabama.

What another great weekend here in Birmingham! I always really look forward to City Stages weekend. City Stages is our city's very own music festival right in the heart of downtown. I love that there are all different kinds of music that attracts a very diverse crowd. It's just great to see everyone out enjoying their mutual love of music, having a great time, in Linn Park, one of my favorite parks, surrounded by all the buildings. I also really like that I can be enjoying some great jazz music early in the day and then later go catch one of my favorite bands that I grew up with and then the next day catch some new groups that my kids have introduced me to. All in all, I think we are really fortunate to have a music festival right in our own backyard.

Early Saturday morning we made it to Pepper Place Market where we ran into our great friends John & Amy. So excited to get some locally grown tomatoe's, blackberries, peaches and honey!

"Glam in Alabam!":South Alabama Road Trip

Every summer Billy & I take a little 1 day road trip. Just the two of us, sans kids! It started somewhat by accident. We had just put our house up for sale & wanted to get away for the day to put it out of our minds for 24 hours. We meandered along 2 lane country roads, a drive I had found recommended on the Southern Living Magazine website one day, and ended up having dinner in the charming southern, antebellum town of Eufala. On the way we detoured and visited Horseshoe Bend National Military Park (quite possibly the most manicured park in Alabama). But it was just the drive, with no particular destination and no time constraints, that was so relaxing. We were able to talk and have fun seeing some interesting parts of our beautiful state that I probably wouldn't just set out to see. Last year we went to Little River Canyon & had a picnic (I am a picnic fanatic!) and stopped in the town of Mentone at the Mentone Springs Hotel.

Anyway, one day last week we took our little road trip. Now, I do consult a book that I have on all sorts of places to visit in the vastly different regions of our state. It is "Fun with the Family in Alabama" by Lynn Grisard Fullman. (Actually, I have always wanted to meet her, so if any of you know her, or knows a friend of a friend,etc.:) We just read in that book and choose a place that we haven't been before (or 1 of us, anyway) and hit the road. This year we went to Demopolis and Selma, two of our historic southern towns.

Demopolis is very small & quaint. What they are most known for is their Christmas on the River boat parade. The highlight was the tours we took of two of their old Antebellum homes, Gaineswod & Bluff Hall. Don't go to Demopolis without planning a visit to them and stepping back in time to the glamorous part of the Old South, beautiful homes, china, crystal, etc.

After that we headed to Selma, where one of my favorite authors lives, Kathryn Tucker Windham, and, of course, birthplace of the Civil Rights movement. We saw the old southern homes, including Sturdivent Hall (featured in Ms. Windham's book "13 Alabama Ghosts", along with Gaineswood) and the hauntingly beautiful Live Oak Cemetery. By this time the Voting Rights Museum had closed, as well as the Old Depot Museum, but we did take a drive over the Edmund Pettus Bridge before stopping by Hancock's Bar-B-Q for dinner and heading back to B'ham.

Wonderful Weekends:Simply Glamorous!

Well, I have to say that the weather did end up affecting our weekend, but not, as it turned out, in a bad way. We may not have gotten to some of the events we were planning on attending but we did get together with lots of friends we hadn't seen in a while, and had a great time. As all those old sayings go; When life gives you lemons..., The best laid plans...., etc., they are so true. Life is fluid, full of changes. And I always say "Adapt or get left behind". So, we adapted to the change in plans and remembered that sometimes (most times!) the simple things in life are the best!

It started Friday afternoon. I was really looking forward to going to the Symphony in the Park concert with the "Three Broadway Divas". It was the last one of the year and as the clouds darkened and the sky grew ominous looking, I was so disappointed! We decided we just wouldn't chance it-glad we did after the sky opened up and the storms came whipping through town. However, our good friends, Steve & Lisa, called to see if we wanted to come over for dinner. Of course we did! Steve was baking some wild salmon he had gotten from The Fish Market.-Lucky us! We had cocktails while we were visiting & getting caught up, and the salmon was baking. Thanks to Steve!- He was making one of my favorites- the "Orange Thing" that was invented at B'ham's celebrated, Highland's Bar & Grill. The recipe for it is in Frank Stitt's' "Southern Table" cookbook. Check your local book stores or Books-A-Million. (Hint: What makes this perfectly refreshing is to serve it in a well chilled martini glass, like Steve does!) Thanks guys for a wonderful evening!

Saturday morning brought more storms and more changes in the plans. However, by afternoon, the skies cleared and gave way to a beautiful evening, which was perfect because our great friends Sam & Agnes were hosting a Lemonade Stand & Shrimp Boil to "Take a Stand Against MS". A large crowd of friends gathered and raised over $1,000.00 to benefit the fight against MS. What better way to spend an evening with friends?

Sunday, was the perfect rainy Sunday morning. We slept in, and after breakfast turned on some jazz & read "The Birmingham News" & "The Sunday New York Times". Nothing fancy, just relaxing! Later that evening we went to dinner at our good friends, Mike & Deborah's house for dinner. We had a delicious spaghetti supper, made elegant by eating by glamorous candlelight!

Best of Birmingham: Positive Press

As you may have realized, I am always happy to pass on a bit of positive news about our fair city when I come across it. In the last month or so I know of 2 wonderful articles about Birmingham that have appeared in 2 very respectable publications, The New York Times and Garden & Gun magazine.

Now, we who are fortunate enough to call the Magic City home have known it's charms and, of course, there is more to learn everyday. I hope I have been able to introduce you to some of my favorites and I have learned about some fantastic new places to try, too. Anyway, those who are not aware of Birmingham's many positive attributes may not be aware of all the cultural activities, talented artists of all genres, and beautiful areas that we have here to enjoy. So it is really exciting to see other people making that discovery, and letting other people around the country in on our little secret.

Date Night: Shakespeare in the Park

Thursday nights have typically been my husband's and my "Date Night". We almost never missed a week when our kids were small. It was vital to our marriage & to us as individuals and I highly recommend the practice to any newer parents out there.

Now, however, our kids are teenagers and are more than happy for us to be gone from the house as often as we want. I know you can't imagine that far off time when they are little but it really does get here before you know it. Anyway, we might not leave them home alone as often as they would like, but we do find ourselves with an easy date night pretty much anytime we want one. Our favorite night is still Thursday nights because there are so many fun things going on in Birmingham to choose from on that night.

This Thursday night we were excited to go catch the Park Players production of "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged): 37 plays in 90 minutes by 3 men in tights" From the description, I do not need to tell you how funny this play is. We laughed so hard (& as you may know I love to laugh!).

The Park Players is Birmingham's Shakespeare in the Park. We are very fortunate to have this talented theatre company in our midst. Every summer they produce 2 or 3 of Shakespeare's plays and I always look forward to catching their performances. And you should, too! Their summer home is the wonderful amphitheatre at Homewood Park so you can go early and take a picnic. They also sell snacks and beverages at the show. It's a fun evening out that is a little something different, just what you need to keep your weekly date night from falling into a dull routine. And trust me, the Park Players are anything but dull. Wonderful Weekends: Do Dah Day!

Well, I finally made it to my 1st ever Do Dah Day! I have missed B'ham's premier Pet Parade every single year, usually due to being out of town. I was afraid I might miss it again this year when I awoke to a heavy downpour of rain. And even though I did miss the actual parade I was very thankful when the rain stopped and the sun came out and we headed over to Highland Avenue for all the festivities as they celebrated their 30th year!

Since this was my first time to go I didn't know what to expect in terms of how big of an event it is. I will tell you, it covers most all of Highland Ave. with thousands of people & their pets (mostly dogs) parading along the sidewalks between Caldwell & Rhodes Parks. There were live bands performimg all day long in both parks & plenty of food & beverage vendors everywhere.

Since it is a pet parade, benefitting local animal shelters, they were very well provided for. There were pet stations set up all around with wading pools, water hoses, treats & water dispensers.

We wouldn't feel right going without our wonderful family dog, so we took our Golden Retriever, Sadie, with us. She had a ball & especially enjoyed sporting her new Do Dah Day kerchief around her neck.

We had a great time at Do Dah Day, especially knowing we were also helping out the shelter animals in our city. And it was very clear Saturday, by the hundreds of dogs at the festival, that Birmingham is a dog loving city! And Sadie is officially a Do Dah Dog! Can't wait for next year.

Beyond Birmingham: Petals From the Past

A few days ago my friend Cathy & I decided to take a trip down to Jemison, Alabama to visit a wonderful nursery called Petals From the Past. Cathy had been before, but it was my first time to visit. I have heard so many great things about what a special place it is, so I was very excited. And I was really glad to be going with Cathy beacause she is a Master Gardner and is gracious enough to try and educate me about all things garden related. Bless her. (& thanks Cathy for not giving up on me the first time you saw my Basil plants:)

If you have never been to Petals From the Past, and I am sure you probably have, you are in for a real treat. They are more than just a nursery. They are also a beautiful gardens. In fact you can book a guided tour with a box lunch. They specialize in heirloom plants, old roses, and wonderful fruits; blackberries, blueberries, strawberries,etc. It is just beautiful! And all the staff is so knowledgable & helpful. Cathy & I were especially fortunate that we got to visit with the owner himself, Jason Powell. And he was so kind and helpful, like visiting with a neighbor!

Anyway, I wanted to buy a few plants for my yard, but I also wanted to get some of their blackberry & blueberry jams, which are incredible. I know this because we are lucky enough to be able to find some of their products around town. Also, one of my absolute favorite bakeries, Continental Bakery in English Village, uses their fruit to make their fruit pies & tarts. Fortunately, they also have a little store on the premises so I was able to buy my jams.

I am looking forward to planting my new flowers and can't wait to go back for another visit to Petals From the Past. Definitely check out their website and plan your visit soon!

She made it a lot of fun and helped us feel very relaxed & comfortable. It is especially meaningful to be with my daughter in the Mother's Day issue and something we will always remember. This past weekend was one of my favorite type of spring weekends in Birmingham. Filled with good music, good food, great friends, fantastic art & beautiful weather. Come to think of it, it was the perfect kind of weekend for anytime of year.

Our weekend got off to a great start friday night when we went out to dinner with our good friends, Neil & Michele, at one of my favorite restaurants in town (& one I have mentioned on here before) Chez Fonfon. We needed some place in town casual (but nice) delicious & pretty quick, since we were going to catch the Chris Botti concert. Naturally, Chez Fonfon fit the bill! However we did get there at 6:00 PM and still had just a little wait at the bar before we got a table. It's a very popular place (& rightly so!) I mean, how can you not love the trout. And the chocolate pot de cream!

After dinner we headed to the Chris Botti concert with our own fabulous Alabama Symphony Orchestra. How lucky we were to catch that show! The ALO was great-they got a very deserved standing ovation. And Chris Botti was awesome. He and his combo certainly know how to put on a show! It was just a wonderful evening with some wonderful friends!

Saturday was gorgeouse, as you know, and I hope you had a chance to make it to the Magic City Art Connection art show, downtown in Linn Park, sometime over the weekend. There were so many talented artists and we were really excited to see our great (& talented) friends Philip & Sherri Tarpley, with their equally talented daughters Carlton & Hallie.

Sunday we relaxed (& worked)around the house and then played a very fun game of Sorry! for family night.

Couldn't have asked for a more wonderful weekend-and I hope to do it all again next week!

Wonderful Weekends: Wish I was Here!

Well, it's shaping up to look like a typical spring weekend here in our lovely city: so many fun events going on that it is hard to choose which ones to attend. It is always so frustrating to me not to be able to make it to all the cool places that, I admit, I can sometimes drive my family crazy by trying to fit them all in. (Sorry guys!) They are usually pretty good sports though, and most of the time they want to go, too. Although, our 17 year old usually wants to do his own thing now, and our daughter many times has plans of her own. Still, I recognize that balance is key and I hope you will too as you try and plan out the weekend ahead.

As for me, this weekend I will be out of town with my daughter attending her sporting event. And, although I am disappointed to miss all the goings on around here, it is always a lot of fun to spend some time with our kids cheering them on in their endeavours.

Thankfully though, Birmingham always likes to get a jump on the weekend and there is always a lot going on on Thursday as well. So, even though I do have a "parents gathering" Thursday evening I am going to get by Homewood to check out the Mustangs. I have mentioned on twitter that my 1st car was a '64 1/2 Fastback-and I loved it! So I am really excited about that.

I am sorry I have to miss all the other great events, but hopefully you won't have to. I think my wonderful husband & son are going to see the Mustangs at the incredible Barber Motor Sports Track and I have asked him to check out the art work at the Mountain Brook Art Ass. Art Show & hopefully choose a couple of plants at the Botanical Gardens Plant Sale. If you see him out make sure to say "hi":)

Everyday Glamour: Meeting New People!

Sorry haven't posted lately but I have been spending (way too much) time learning twitter! Actually I have been meeting a whole new group of people who help to make B'ham the Magic City that it is! For all of you that I "tweet" with on twitter-Thanks for your patience & kindness. And thanks for checking out my little blog:) It has been frustrating & time consuming but also so much fun.

I have found out about so many talented, interesting individuals in our wonderful city that I don't know I would have known about any other way. I always knew we were so fortunate to have an abundance of creativity and talent here but I am truly amazed! I look forward to introducing them to you as I continue blogging about all the cool people and places that make our city a great place to call home! Best of B'ham: Helping Our Neighbors

As you may know by now I really love jazz music and I feel that we are extremely fortunate to have so many amazingly talented musicians that call Birmingham home. I have just found out that our own wonderful bassist, Cleve Eaton, has been diagnosed with oral cancer and the Open Door Cafe is holding a benefit for him this Saturday starting at 2:00. Cleve & his band will play at 6:30 pm. The cost is $20.

If you are not familiar with Cleve Eaton's music, or have not heard him play lately, you will surely want to take a few minutes to check out his website. You will feel so much more glamorous knowing you live in the same city that he calls home after reading is bio. and all the "jazz greats" he has played with. In fact, he is a "great" himself and one we are lucky to call our own.

I hope you will take some time this Saturday to go out to the Open Door Cafe to hear some great music, eat some great food, and help out one of Birmingham's best. I hope to see you there! Thanks-LA

Everyday Glamour: Spring in Birmingham!

Well, it's finally, officially spring and there isn't a lovelier time of year here in Birmingham (with the possible exception of fall). The azaleas are blooming, along with dogwood & red bud trees, many types of flowers and shrubs that I do not know the names of, and I just saw my first yellow tulip blooming in my yard. There really is some new surprise everyday that has bloomed, seemingly overnight, awaiting to be discovered.

There are many wonderful places all around town that offer a perfect chance to enjoy spring's beauty. One of my favorites is the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. They are beautiful all year long but I think especially so in springtime. I also enjoy Aldridge Gardens, and there are lot's of little nature trails, hiking trails & walking paths all around town that are also in bloom this time of year. You probably have your own favorite places and I would love to hear about them.

I really do hope you will make a point to get outside and enjoy the springtime beauty of our city. It is very glamorous, it's all around us, and it's Free! So enjoy.

Wonderful Weekends: Family, Friends, Food, etc.

What a difference a week makes, right? It's hard to believe that last weekend we were under a blanket of snow and now it feels like spring! We were able to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather and I hope you did, too.

This weekend was a mixture of a little bit of everything. We worked in the yard, I got in a walk everyday on my favorite walking trail, we visited with friends and had a "mini" family night.

Friday night, after my daughter & I finished hosting our Mother/Daughter Book Club meeting, she went out with some friends and we had our friends Deborah & Mike over for pizza. It was very relaxed & casual, just the way I like to entertain. In fact, they picked up the pizza from our favorite place, Bongiorno, and brought it with them. (Thanks, guys!)

We got together with our good friends, Barry & Cathy, Saturday night and went to dinner at one of my new favorite restaurants, Bettola. I was the only one who hadn't eaten there before. I had tried once before but the wait was too long so went somewhere else. So I have been looking for a chance to try again. I am so glad it worked out Saturday night. We got there at 6:15, early enough to get a table inside (but not early enough for a table outside on their patio. In this wonderful weather I guess you have to get there at 4:00!). As you can see, Bettola is a very popular place to dine. However, I didn't mind sitting inside. It has a very cool atmosphere about it. Everybody loved their meal (I think Billy's lasagne was THE best!) and then we went back to Barry & Cathy's for coffee & dessert (it was delicious, Cathy!) and some very interesting conversation! Great Fun.

Sunday afternoon we grilled out and then played a 3/4 family game of dominoes. (It's hard to make those older teens join in sometimes. But we will try again!)

All in all a very fun, fabulous, & glamorous weekend in Birmingham!

Date Night: A Celebration with Friends!

Last night Billy & I shared our "Date Night" with some great friends of ours. We helped them celebrate their 21st wedding anniversary by going to dinner at Hot & Hot Fish Club. This is one of our favorite restaurants for a special dinner out and of course, 21 years of marriage is definitely an occasion worth celebrating!

"Hot & Hot", owned & operated by nationally recognized chef Chris Hastings & his wife Idie, is of course, another one of our city's award winning restaurants, and for good reason. Everything about it is wonderful, food, service, ambience, everything. Make sure you are hungry when you go because after your wonderful dinner you will surely want to order one (or more) of their desserts.

We had a great time and I can't wait for another reason to go back to the Hot and Hot Fish Club. Like, maybe because it's a Friday? If you plan to go (and you should!) make sure to make your reservations early!

Everyday Glamour: Camellias

As we all know, living glamorously is about how we live our lives everyday, not just on special occasions. Adding a little glamour into each day will add up to a lifetime lived beautifully. As with most other things in life glamour begins at home, so that is a great place to start adding a special touch.

One of my favorite glamorous touches is to have fresh flowers in the house. I enjoy them everytime I walk into the room. You can buy inexpensive bouquets from the grocery store that are very pretty, but I also love to have something blooming in my yard that I can just go outside and cut. Fortunately for us here in Birmingham we have weather that allows for something to be in bloom almost year round. This time of year it has been Camellias. I love these flowers. They are not fragrant but they bloom in the coldest weather when nothing else is. And this year seemed to be especially good for them because my neighbors bushes have been completely covered with flowers and I have been enjoying them out of my kitchen window.

She is 90 years old, my neighbor, and I called to tell her how lovely her camellias were. She begged me to please come cut as many I wanted. She loves to share her flowers. Her bushes are over 40 years old and they are huge. So I went and visited with her and cut some for her to have inside and cut enough for several bouquets for me. We have them all over the house. She called again to tell me to please come cut some more before they start to fade. I can't tell you how much we have enjoyed these little bouquets evrywhere. They are very glamorous, but the really glamorous part is the love and friendship that our neighbor shares with others, she is the true essence of glamour!

Spring is a great time to plant, so go get some camellia bushes to plant and next year you could be enjoying camellias, too.

Wonderful Weekends: Jazz & a Snowy Winter Day!

This past weekend was an especially glamorous one for all of us here in Birmingham when we got to enjoy a snowfall on Sunday that blanketed the city in a coat of white. I hope everyone was able to get outside and take a walk or sled ride, build a snowman or have a snowball fight. As we know, it doesn't happen often and it doesn't stick around long so you have to enjoy it while you can. In fact, in typical southern style, it was gone by late afternoon. But we made lasting photographs and memories that don't melt with the sun.

Saturday night we went to dinner with friends at one of our favorite restaurants that I have mentioned on here before. That would be Bottega Cafe on Highland Avenue. We had a delicious dinner (as always) before we went to a show that I have been anticipating for some time. We went to see (hear) the Blue Note Records 70th Anniversary Jazz Tour at our beautiful Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center. As you may know, (if you have been following my blog. Or not, if you haven't) I love jazz and I had really been looking forward to this show. I was not disappointed. They were fantastic! It was a wonderful evening and how fortunate we are to have such a glamorous concert hall as the Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center that brings in top, world class entertainment that all of us have a chance to enjoy. Birmingham's Civil Rights History: The Civil Rights Institute

The month of February, as everyone knows, is Black History Month and I can't think of a better time to acknowledge our city's history in the Civil Right's Movement. And I can't think of a better way to observe that role than making a visit to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

It is not always an easy visit to make. It is hard to confront the past sometimes and yet we must do that to move forward. If you haven't yet been to the BCRI, I encourage you to do so. It is a testament to our ability to acknowledge the past but move forward with the understanding of the responsibility our city, and we as citizens, have to be an influence for a more positive future for us all.

New Feature: B'ham Teen Scene!

I am really excited about this new feature of my blog, about Birmingham's Teen Scene. I am mostly excited because my daughter and I are collaborating on this together. She will actually be a contributing blogger(with some anonymous help about the older teens, from my son). We both feel that this is an under served age group in our area, so from time to time she will be highlighting some of the things that the teenage crowd enjoying doing in Birmingham. I know she would love any suggestions you might have so feel free to leave a comment. We hope you enjoy it. Thanks!

My friends and I really enjoy going to the Summit shopping center most weekends. We meet for dinner at Johnny Rockets (I suggest the chocolate milkshake!) and then go to a movie. Since none of us can drive yet we take the Summit tram from place to place. It's really casual and a lot of fun. We usually go in huge groups of people. We love winding down after the school week with all our friends; it's the perfect stress-reliever. It may sound cliche, dinner and a movie, but it is really a lot of fun!

Beyond Birmingham: Birthday at the Beach

Well, thanks to President's Day It was a long holiday weekend and I just got back from the beach. Yep. The beach in February. My mom just celebrated a very glamorous birthday (she will not let me reveal which number) and we went down there to help her celebrate in style.

Now the weather was not what you might think of as beach weather but as "they" say, "a bad day at the beach is better than a good day at home". The weather was not that bad, really. Actually, we love it there this time of year. Just put on a light sweater, kick off your shoes and roll up your pants legs and your good to go! We went for long walks on the beach and collected fantastic sea shells. We had the place to ourselves at first, but then people started popping up out of the sand like crabs. It was still pretty quiet though. We took my mom to her favorite restaurant, The Ocean Club, where we enjoyed wonderful dining to live dance music the band was playing. Sunday, the rain that had been drizzling off and on the whole weekend, finally stopped and the sun came out and we were able to enjoy lunch sitting outside across from the beach. Sadly, we did have to come back home but we bring back with us fun memories (and lot's of shells!).

And that is the beauty of living here in Birmingham. You get up and have breakfast at home and by lunch time you are sitting out on the beach having a cocktail, with sand between your toes! Ahhh, truly part of Birmingham's glamorous best! Wish you were here!

Wonderful Weekends: Spring in February!

I think you will all agree that this past weekend was indeed a "Wonderful Weekend". How lucky for us to have spring in February. For those of you not fortunate enough to live in the South, it was in the low 70's with plenty of sunshine this weekend.

I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy this gift. We sure did and I know a lot of people were out in the parks on Highland Avenue, one of Birmingham's most beautiful areas. After lunch on Sunday at one of our favorite restaurants, Rojo, we took our dog to play at Rhodes Park. There are always several people with their dogs in this park (or is it dogs with their people?) and it is a great place to let your canine pet run around and visit with friends and play catch. I don't know if it is officially a "dog park" but it is un-officially and everyone played nice.

Saturday, I met up with my friend, Tinna, whom I haven't seen in years but recently found on Facebook, and we had lunch at the 5 Points grill in 5 Points South. This is the place for people watching and, given the beautiful weather, there were plenty of people out to watch. Great Tilapia Tacos, too!

As always, there were plenty events going on around town and and I hope you really took advantage of the beautiful, warm weather and got out and enjoyed some of them! Lucky us, it's great to live in the glamorous southern city of Birmingham, Alabama!

All About You: Keeping Fit While Trying Something New!

Well, the new year is well underway and if you're like me you are still trying to stick to your resolution of getting fit and sticking to an exercise routine. I love to walk but I have to admit I am a fair weather walker. I don't enjoy it if it is cold and rainy outside. And we have had our share of those days (although the last two days have been gorgeous! & I walked). As we all know, if we don't enjoy the activity we won't do it, so I needed to do something else besides walking only on sunny days.

Now, I used to dance ballet & jazz many moons ago, and periodically I have gone to a few classes over the years. But I just could never find the right class for me. But close to where I live now is this charming little dance studio. I new they had children's classes but I always wondered if they taught adult classes as well. I just never called to check before because it has been so long since I last danced that I felt sort of nervous about if I could do it again. I finally called and found out, to my great delight, that they do! Now I go take a ballet/jazz class every week. I am having a ball and all the other ladies and our instructor have been really nice. We are all there having fun reconnecting to our love of dance. I will admit it has been difficult to move for the next two days but they swear it gets better in a about a month.

I guess my point is to think about what you really enjoy and check around to see where you might can join in a class. This is such an important part of living a glamorous life; staying fit & active, trying something new or re-connecting to something you love, meeting new people, and most importantly, overcoming your fears. It's all about living glamorously at every age, every day.

So, don't give up on your goals and have fun!

Everyone has been so supportive and encouraging about my little guide booklet I have written and I want to take this opportunity to tell everyone that has told me how inspirational they found the guide to be that you have inspired me, too. With so much positive feedback I felt that the GSG's should have their own place. So, please take a few minutes when you can and take a look around the new site.
